Starting MySQL after Leopard upgrade

After upgrading to Leopard, the MySQL preferences pane would not start the database.

Starting mysql from a terminal

$ cd /usr/local/mysql/bin
$ sudo -b ./mysqld_safe

Stop mysql

$ sudo mysqladmin shutdown
